Apr. 11th, 2007 @ 10:57 am TMBG tribute album
I'm a huge They Might Be Giants fan and have recently listened to "Hello Radio: The Songs of They Might Be Giants." Figured I'd give a song by song review of the whole album just because I'm that bored.

1) Ana Ng (Self) - Possibly the best song on the album. I've only heard one other Self song (So Low) and I really liked it. I'm starting to think I should check out their other stuff. They do a really good power pop version of Ana Ng. I'm going to be honest, I like it more than the original.

2) Pet Name (The Long Winters) - Alright, not great. Don't really like the singer's voice. Decent musically.

3) Narrow Your Eyes (David Miller) - Incredibly poppy version which I feel works incredibly well. I love the clap track and the cheesy synth. Another personal favorite of the album.

4) She's an Angel (Charles Douglas) - Very raw sounding. The singing is a little odd, but it kind of works for this song. Enjoyable, but not memorable.

5) Road Movie to Berlin (Frank Black) - Hey, it's Frank Black, he can do whatever he wants.

6) They'll Need a Crane (The Wrens) - Slow and moody. Lots of ambient instrumentals. Good job of building throughout the song and then slowly dying out after the climax.

7) Dead (Steve Burns) - Horns, strings and an acoustic guitar instead of the Piano on Dead. Dead is one of my favorite TMBG songs, so it would be hard to cover it and me not feel the need to compare it to the original negatively. If I hadn't heard the original, it would be a pretty decent.

8) Letterbox (OK Go) - I expected more from this one I guess. I like OK Go, I like Letterbox, I expected good things. The heavy distortion on the vocals just doesn't work. The music is incredibly simplistic. You feel like at times the song is building into something better, but then it just goes back to being lifeless.

9) Boat of Car (Recepter) - I don't know why you would choose to cover Boat of Car. I really don't. Did they just pick between doing this or doing "Minimum Wage?"

10) Don't Let's Start (This Radiant Boy) - Really doesn't stray much from the original other than the singers voice which is kind of nasally. Pretty bland.

11) Doctor Worm (Jason Trachtenburg) - Just acoustic guitar and vocals. I really like it. Changes up the vocal rhythms and adds a lot of breaks which add to the song overall.

12) It's Not My Birthday (Fluid Ounces) - They have an accordion. Huge bonus points for that alone. And then they go ahead and have an incredible cover. Probably the most fun song on this album.

13) Another First Kiss (Brett Kull) - Another one of those, "why would you choose to cover this?" songs. Pick something more adventurous than TMBG's only sappy love song. Heck, at least cover the Long Tall Weekend version rather than the Mink Car version.

14) The End of the Tour (Hotel Lights) - Very very sweet version of this song. A lot of the interpretations of the lyrics of this song are very morbid so making the version as beautiful as possible makes it really work. I love the orchestration.

Mar. 15th, 2007 @ 07:29 pm Beware the Ides of March
The cadillac stood by the house
And the yanks they were within
And the tinker boys they hissed advice
hot-wire her with a pin
Then we turned and shook as we had a look
In the room where the dead men lay
So big jim dwyer made his last trip
To the shores where his fathers laid

Fifteen minutes later
We had our first taste of whiskey
There was uncles giving lectures
On ancient irish history
The men all started telling jokes
And the women they got frisky
By five oclock in the evening
Every bastard there was piskey

Fare thee well going away
Theres nothing left to say
Farewell to new york city boys
To boston and pa
He took them out
With a well-aimed clout
He was often heard to say
Im a free born man of the usa

He fought the champ in pittsburgh
And he slashed him to the ground
He took on tiny tartanella
And it only went one round
He never had no time for reds
For drink or dice or whores
And he never threw a fight
Unless the fight was right
So they sent him to the war

Fare the well gone away
Theres nothing left to say
With a slainte joe and erin go
My loves in amerikay
The calling of the rosary
Spanish winde from far away
Im a free born man of the usa

This morning on the harbour
When I said goodbye to you
I remember how I swore
That Id come back to you one day
And as the sunset came to meet
The evening on the hill
I told you Id always love
I always did and I always will

Fare thee well gone away
Theres nothing left to say
cept to say adieu
To your eyes as blue
As the water in the bay
And to big jim dwyer
The man of wire
Who was often heard to say
Im a free born man of the usa

Apparently I never actually update this thing. Who'da thunk it? Um, what's new... I've been with Julia for a little over two months. My ass looks awesome... wait that's not new, it's always looked awesome. I'm narcissistic, but again, that's not new. I've discovered that I like aged rums which is kind of interesting because I had avoided rum due to the fact that I disliked all the crap rum that I had had and didn't realize that good rum is a completely different taste. Bacardi and Captain Morgans are gross. Apparently I'm an alcoholic, but to quote Randy Marsh at an AA meeting, "Hi, my name is Max and I just really like beer." Meh, I'm bored again. I'm remembering why I never update this thing.

I've been far too lazy to come up with new posts lately so I've decided on a new idea, best of max's old journal. Yes my old journal which was retired and hidden in a secret location when I realized that I was far far too public with my emotions in it and didn't realize the true purpose of online journals which is to spew random shit that nobody cares about. There are probably some gems in it though and in lieu of me actually coming up with anything new, I'll ocasionally post some.

I kind of find it funny how the entire nation of Canada has this gigantic inferiority complex. They all seem to think that everyone in the US has this big rivalry against Canada and we hate it. The funny thing is there is no rivalry on this side. We just don't care about it. Every Canadian has to try to insult the US because they think there's a big rivalry. I actually like Canada. This summer I really want to go up to Montreal and get drunk off my ass and see an Expos game from behind home plate all for less than five American dolars. I am definately not an American pride person as I think there's a good deal wrong with this country (basically, most of the south is completely useless), but I find it really funny that every Canadian has the need to have so much Canadian pride and so much anti American feelings when the majority of their population lives within 10 miles of the US border. (fun analogy for New Englanders, Canada is to US as Rhode Island is to Massachusetts).

So in conclusion, Canada - a country with a major self esteem problem

Over the mountain
Down in the valley
Lives a former talk-show host
Everybody knows his name
He says theres no doubt about it
It was the myth of fingerprints
Ive seen them all and man
Theyre all the same
Well, the sun gets weary
And the sun goes down
Ever since the watermelon
And the lights come up
On the black pit town
Somebody says whats a better thing to do
Well, its not just me
And its not just you
This is all around the world

Out in the indian ocean somewhere
Theres a former army post
Abandoned now just like the war
And theres no doubt about it
It was the myth of fingerprints
Thats what that old army post was for

Well, the sun gets bloody
And the sun goes down
Ever since the watermelon
And the lights come up
On the black pit town
Somebody says whats a better thing to do
Well, its not just me
And its not just you
This is all around the world

Over the mountain
Down in the valley
Lives the former talk-show host
Far and wide his name was known
He said theres no doubt about it
It was the myth of fingerprints
Thats why we must learn to live alone

The Life Pursuit by Belle and Sebastion at first kind of missed with me, but the more I listen to this album the more I like it. It's not Dear Catastrophe Waitress, but it's closer than I originally thought. It's almost brought a new element to the band. It has the sense of ultra-pop that DCW had as well as some completely new sounds as well. It's clear that the Tigermilk days are gone and this band is continually evolving.

I got to thinking about songs that I want associated with the big events in my life. For my marriage, you're the first, the last, my everything by Barry White is an absolute must as my wedding song. Honestly, I'd call the wedding off if that was an issue. Granted, that's first marriage only. If I get remarried, gonna have to go with something else the second time. Maybe Believe by Stevie Wonder.... that'd work. Obviously this one's stolen from Cusack, but it's too good not to use. The first song at my funeral MUST be Many Rivers to Cross by Jimmy Cliff and I would like the beautiful woman weeping during the song dynamic as well. After that though, I think I'd just mess with people. Stuff like Highway to Hell by ACDC. Hurt by NIN. Shout at the Devil by Motley Crue. I haven't worked it out completely past many rivers to cross. I am pretty sure that I want my remains cremated and left in a coffee tin in the kitchen though.

On Coldplay: For all those Coldplay fans out there, I have a treat for you. I found this other band that ALSO sounds just like U2 and not only that, but they write catchier songs. They're called U2. I recomend checking them out.

On Terry Francona: I saw Tito today at Anna's Taqueria. It makes me feel good to know that the guy running the Red Sox likes good food.

On Goldschlager: While it would still be delicious on it's own, I really think it's the fact that you're drinking pieces of gold that really makes the drink. Plus, this might be an urban legend, but the gold may or may not make small cuts to your throat to help the alcohol hit your blood streme quicker.

I went to see Tegan and Sara tonight. My inner lesbian came out big time. Love them. Too bad the crowd was a bunch of total assholes. Cake was the headliner, someone threw the top of a pineapple a the singer for cake and hit him in the head. I really want to see Tegan and Sara again in a better venue with less assholes. Oh and I really want to have sex with Tegan and Sara as well, but that's neither here nor there.

Here's an idea cause I'm bored. Top five lists. The first one is inspired by an unintentional Chris Meloni marithon I had last night.

Top Five Movie Twists

1) Spacey is Soze
2) Bruce Willis watches his own death in 12 monkeys
3) Azazel is the narator of Fallen (that's the real twist in my oppinion, not that Azazel wins)
4) Norton is Durden
5) Soylent Green is People (okay, this isn't that great of a twist or if any one else other than me has actually seen it, a great movie. It's actually pretty comically bad, but it's kind of funny that pretty much everyone knows the twist, or at least the phrase "Soylent Green is People" even though they know nothing else about the movie. Personally, I couldn't stop laughing about the sign in the movie that says "Tuesday is Soylent Green Day." Something about that just made me chuckle)
